Student Loss

To the parents, families, and community members of the Missisquoi Valley School District,

It is with profound sadness that we write this letter to let you know that one of our students passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 7th. Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go out to his family and friends during this unimaginable and profoundly sad time.

During this time as the school community processes the tragic news and copes with grief, the school district will offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff. Beginning this morning, our colleagues at Northwestern Counseling and Support Services will be available throughout the day to help support students and staff as they process this loss. Additionally, our clinical support team and school counselors will also be available to meet with individuals or groups of students, as needed.

A student death is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a significant amount of  distress for many students. If you feel that your children are having difficulty, we encourage you to discuss their thoughts and feelings to help them work through their grief or concerns. Please also consider monitoring and discussing your children’s communications (social media, phone, e-mails, text messages) to further assess their potential needs.

If you feel that your children need to speak to a counselor or other caring adult, please do not hesitate to call our schools and let us know. Additionally, you should feel free to contact the school (868-7311 ext.144 ) for guidance on how to handle and talk about any grief or concerns that your children may be experiencing. Information is also available on the school’s website at www.mvuschool.org to help your child cope with loss. We have also included links below with information on how best to support those coping with this tragic news.

This is a difficult time for everyone, but we know our students and staff will lean on each other as they fondly remember their classmate. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school at any time.

Sincerely,

MVU Administration, Faculty, and Staff
