As winter arrives, families often wonder how the district decides on snow days, delays, or closures. When bad weather is possible, the Superintendent and district team carefully review the situation. They look at information from the National Weather Service and talk with local road crews, bus companies, and nearby school districts. Most decisions are made before 5:30 a.m. so families can be notified as early as possible.
This winter, all urgent weather updates will be sent through our new notification system, Parent Square. The district tested the system twice this fall to make sure it works well. To receive messages without delay, families should check that their contact information in Parent Square is correct. If you did not receive the test alerts, please contact your school’s main office for help.
Student safety is always the top priority when weather decisions are made. The district closely watches road conditions, especially the roads used by school buses and the areas where students wait for pickup. Sometimes weather can affect only parts of the district, such as higher elevation roads that may be icy while other areas are clear. The team also looks at how much snow or ice is falling and whether conditions are expected to get worse quickly.
The school calendar includes two built-in snow days, but safety will always come before concerns about make-up days. Families should also know that weather can change after a decision is made, even later in the morning. The district thanks parents, students, and staff for their patience and cooperation as everyone works together to stay safe during winter weather.
