Vermont’s 2026 VTCAP Results Show Gains

The Vermont Agency of Education released preliminary 2025-2026 VTCAP results in September, showing statewide proficiency gains of 1-4 percentage points in ELA, math, and science compared to the prior year. Most grades showed improvement across all three subjects, though a technical glitch on the ELA essay section may have suppressed some scores. Cohort data shows encouraging elementary math gains, with one cohort climbing from 30% to 51% proficiency from grade 4 to grade 6, though middle school grades showed declines in some areas. The equity picture remains a significant concern: historically marginalized students, who make up 57% of Vermont’s roughly 80,000 enrolled students, trailed their peers by 30 to 38 percentage points in proficiency across ELA, math, and science, with the widest gaps appearing in Grade 6. District-level MVSD results will be shared with the Board as soon as the data embargo is lifted this fall.
